Hippo and Estefex’s first cd release

October 11th, 2012 | By Angela

2004 was a big year for the duo Hippo & Estefex. It was the year that the weekly @ Clarks “Turn It Up” was started by the duo and their first of many mix cd’s to be released. After a request by a friend was made of where he could find this first mix cd, I decided to go through my old computer and pull the file off for him. I figured this was the appropriate forum to place the mix for many to enjoy. Hope you all like. This one is for you Jeff!

Frenzi 2 Year Anniversary Feat. CALIBRE

June 25th, 2012 | By Angela

FRENZI 2 Year Anniversary with CALIBRE

CALIBRE – (Belfast, Ireland)
[Signature Recordings | abunchofcuts.com | Soul:r | Deep Medi]

Dominick Martin aka Calibre has been responsible for some of the most beautiful tracks in drum & bass to date and continues to drop jaws worldwide with his sublime and sultry productions. Calibre’s sound has progressed taking in elements of jazz, funk, dub and techno but lost none of it’s soul. His influence in drum & bass has been profound yet Calibre continues to evolve as an artist, exploring new techniques and styles in his music. His sets focus primarily on the deeper, more musical side of drum & bass yet never disappoint the dancefloor. Artists and DJ’s from all corners of the electronic music spectrum constantly remark on Calibre DJ sets restoring their faith in Drum & Bass as a vital musical force.

Often imitated but never bettered, Calibre’s sound remains his own after ten years of producing and releasing drum & bass. A creative force and inspiration to others, he refuses to be pinned down to making music in a single style. His single for the Deep Medi label, run by Digital Mystikz don Mala, received a warm reception in the dubstep scene and has demonstrated once again his diversity as a producer.

Consistently the standout on worldwide lineups, every Calibre set is a unique and much valued experience for all those lucky enough to encounter this visionary in a DJ setting.

UK THURSDAYS PRESENTS TOTAL SCIENCE N MC TALI

September 27th, 2011 | By Angela

—TOTAL SCIENCE—

Total Science is the stage name of drum and bass producers Jason Greenhalgh and Paul Smith.

The pair first met in 1987, both living on Blackbird Leys estate in Oxford, England and brought together through a mutual love of hip hop. Distracted by the arrival of hardcore in the early nineties, record collecting was quickly followed by DJing and eventually production. Greenhalgh was the first into the studio, with “Freestyle Fanatic” launching his career in 1991. However it was the establishment of the Legend imprint and specifically Greenhalgh’s “Champion Sound”, which took their profile beyond the many anonymous white labels that were dominating the music at the time.

In 1994, the pair started recording together, with “Got to Believe” the first in a series of records which pushed the label away from the darkside[disambiguation needed] movement and more towards the epic string sections and rolling beats which started to appear on labels like Lucky Spin, Basement and Good Looking. After six years of recording singles for others, the pair established the CIA label in the closing months of 1997 with the help of Brillo from Timeless.

The release of their Silent Reign EP for Goldie’s Metalheadz breathed a new lease of life into the project, and the pair achieved a further boost with a well-timed Bad Company remix of “Champion Sound” which conjured further interest in what they were doing at their own label. Their debut album Advance exposed a further field of interest, with downtempo experiments logged as a series of “Breaks” on the majority of their early EPs extended to some deep house, this breadth taken a step further with their Skin Deep[disambiguation needed] imprint which has forged broken beat to considerable acclaim. Their pioneering of a revival in old school sounds and arrangements, together with Digital and Reinforced, dominated drum & bass throughout 2001.

—MC TALI (FAREWELL TOUR)—

Tali is accredited with being the most successful female MC in Drum N Bass of all time. With three DnB Awards, a solo album, numerous singles and guest vocals under her belt, Tali has MC’d all around the world with many of the scenes heavyweights.

Discovered by Roni Size back in 2001, Tali moved from New Zealand to the UK to sign to the legendary ‘Full Cycle Records’ and went onto write and record the first female MC album ever released in DnB – ‘Lyric on My Lip’ Full Cycle 2004 (and one of the first ever MC albums fullstop!) with production from Roni Size, Krust, Clipz, and DJ Die, with featured vocals from Dynamite MC. From this Tali was given the name ‘The First Lady of Full Cycle’ which after winning her first DnB award got shortened to ‘The First Lady of the Mic’.

Since then, Tali has gone on to MC and Record with other reputable names in DnB, such as Marky (Brazil), Shy FX, Goldie, Dillinja, Lynx, Marcus Intalex, Shimon, Camo & Krooked, Atlantic Connection (US), SS and Influx UK, Simon ‘Bassline” Smith, LTJ Bukem, EZ Rollers, Dirtyphonics, Reid Speed and Shortee, and Dope Amo to name but a few, as well as expanding into other genres, with featured vocals alongside The Freestylers, Stereotype, Martjin Ten Velden and Fran and Josh.

Tali this month is releasing her LP, ‘Dark Days, High Nights’ on Shimon’s AudioPorn label this month, and the lineup so far includes tunes from Shimon, Dirtyphonics, Benny Page, Skism, Lynx & Malibu Rhodes, and Ed Rush, to name but a few, and includes some special guest vocal appearances!

Tali has graced the covers of DJ Magazine and Knowledge, and received radio support from Jo Whiley’s ‘Live Lounge’, Steve Lamacq, Fabio and Grooverider, Crissy Criss, DJ Bailey, Annie Mac, Misterjam, and Zane Lowe throughout her career. Tali also fronts her own live Band, has composed the score to a political musical that has shown at The HighTide Festival in Suffolk and The West End, is a contributing writer to various music magazines and is currently writing a book about her experiences as a female MC within Drum N Bass.

AZDNB.COM Presents Original Sin (True Playaz)

October 14th, 2010 | By Angela

Original Sin

While some of you may not be 100% familiar with the name Original Sin, all will become clear when you realize that this is the new production alias of none other than Adam Tindall, one half of the undisputed kings of dancefloor drum & bass, G Dub.

Born and bred in Newcastle, Adam was initially drawn to D&B by albums such as the incredible ‘Platinum Breakz’ compilation from the Metalheadz camp, and Grooverider’s legendary ‘Prototype Years’. His love for the music grew and grew until the desire to become more actively involved in the scene took hold and he took up DJing shortly before enrolling himself at Music College.

It was at college that Adam met Jake Carter and the infamous Generation Dub was forged. However, it wasn’t long before the Adam realized that Music College was a pointless pursuit and he decided to quit in order to concentrate fully on making music at home. It wasn’t long before drum & bass legend DJ SS snapped up two of G Dub’s early productions for his Reformed imprint.

The successive deal with DJ Hype & Pascal’s Ganja imprint proved to be the making of the G Dub franchise, as Adam and Jake’s studio let off more anthems than an Olympic Games opening ceremony and tracks such as ‘Tink Ya Bad?’, ‘Warp Speed’ ‘Forever’ and ‘Beast City’ collectively smashed up more dancefloors than a specialist nightclub demolition team.

In early 2008 Adam and Jake parted company and Adam decided to pursue solo avenues under the name Original Sin. The ridiculously heavy ‘Don’t Be Silly’, ‘Cheater Cheater’, ‘D For Danger’ and his remixes of Shy FX’s classic Ebony Dubsters track ‘Rah’ and Rufige Kru’s ‘Monkey Boy’ have gone a long way to stamping his individual mark on the Drum & Bass scene.

Original Sin shows no signs of slowing down, though, as Adam prepares to drop the huge ‘Dr Feels Good’ EP on Playaz, showcasing a completely refined and mature sound which is as deadly on the dancefloor as it is on the radio.
