UK THURSDAYS PRESENTS TOTAL SCIENCE N MC TALI

—TOTAL SCIENCE—
Total Science is the stage name of drum and bass producers Jason Greenhalgh and Paul Smith.
The pair first met in 1987, both living on Blackbird Leys estate in Oxford, England and brought together through a mutual love of hip hop. Distracted by the arrival of hardcore in the early nineties, record collecting was quickly followed by DJing and eventually production. Greenhalgh was the first into the studio, with “Freestyle Fanatic” launching his career in 1991. However it was the establishment of the Legend imprint and specifically Greenhalgh’s “Champion Sound”, which took their profile beyond the many anonymous white labels that were dominating the music at the time.
In 1994, the pair started recording together, with “Got to Believe” the first in a series of records which pushed the label away from the darkside[disambiguation needed] movement and more towards the epic string sections and rolling beats which started to appear on labels like Lucky Spin, Basement and Good Looking. After six years of recording singles for others, the pair established the CIA label in the closing months of 1997 with the help of Brillo from Timeless.
The release of their Silent Reign EP for Goldie’s Metalheadz breathed a new lease of life into the project, and the pair achieved a further boost with a well-timed Bad Company remix of “Champion Sound” which conjured further interest in what they were doing at their own label. Their debut album Advance exposed a further field of interest, with downtempo experiments logged as a series of “Breaks” on the majority of their early EPs extended to some deep house, this breadth taken a step further with their Skin Deep[disambiguation needed] imprint which has forged broken beat to considerable acclaim. Their pioneering of a revival in old school sounds and arrangements, together with Digital and Reinforced, dominated drum & bass throughout 2001.
—MC TALI (FAREWELL TOUR)—
Tali is accredited with being the most successful female MC in Drum N Bass of all time. With three DnB Awards, a solo album, numerous singles and guest vocals under her belt, Tali has MC’d all around the world with many of the scenes heavyweights.
Discovered by Roni Size back in 2001, Tali moved from New Zealand to the UK to sign to the legendary ‘Full Cycle Records’ and went onto write and record the first female MC album ever released in DnB – ‘Lyric on My Lip’ Full Cycle 2004 (and one of the first ever MC albums fullstop!) with production from Roni Size, Krust, Clipz, and DJ Die, with featured vocals from Dynamite MC. From this Tali was given the name ‘The First Lady of Full Cycle’ which after winning her first DnB award got shortened to ‘The First Lady of the Mic’.
Since then, Tali has gone on to MC and Record with other reputable names in DnB, such as Marky (Brazil), Shy FX, Goldie, Dillinja, Lynx, Marcus Intalex, Shimon, Camo & Krooked, Atlantic Connection (US), SS and Influx UK, Simon ‘Bassline” Smith, LTJ Bukem, EZ Rollers, Dirtyphonics, Reid Speed and Shortee, and Dope Amo to name but a few, as well as expanding into other genres, with featured vocals alongside The Freestylers, Stereotype, Martjin Ten Velden and Fran and Josh.
Tali this month is releasing her LP, ‘Dark Days, High Nights’ on Shimon’s AudioPorn label this month, and the lineup so far includes tunes from Shimon, Dirtyphonics, Benny Page, Skism, Lynx & Malibu Rhodes, and Ed Rush, to name but a few, and includes some special guest vocal appearances!
Tali has graced the covers of DJ Magazine and Knowledge, and received radio support from Jo Whiley’s ‘Live Lounge’, Steve Lamacq, Fabio and Grooverider, Crissy Criss, DJ Bailey, Annie Mac, Misterjam, and Zane Lowe throughout her career. Tali also fronts her own live Band, has composed the score to a political musical that has shown at The HighTide Festival in Suffolk and The West End, is a contributing writer to various music magazines and is currently writing a book about her experiences as a female MC within Drum N Bass.
