UKT Presents: Soul Slinger n Estefex Going Away Party 3.28.2013

March 26th, 2013 | By

>>>>>>>>SOUL SLINGER<<<<<<<<<<

While many modern-day American drum and bass DJs fight for the title of “don”, the true American Emperor of Drum and bass is still standing! Frequently referred to as the Russel Simons of the electronic music scene, Soul Slinger the true American electronic music mogul. For years he has been a monumental figure of the past and present state of Electronic Music Culture.

Born and raised in Sao Paulo Brazil, Carlos Soul Slinger began his career in the early 1980’s. After many years, looking for new direction, Soul Slinger decided to make the move to New York city. In 1989, Slinger opened along Rey , what was to be one of the most important icons of the American rave culture – the store known as Liquid Sky. Liquid Sky is the original “rave emporium” in the United States. Providing clothing, cosmetics, novelties, mix tapes and vinyl. The trend soon followed across the United States with many other fundamental shops such as Satellite Records, Break Beat Science, Dr Free Clouds Mixing Lab, Pure Acid, and many others.

DJ Soul Slinger quickly followed up the success of the store with a record label – Liquid Sky Music / Jungle Sky Records. Liquid Sky Music has been responsible for some of the most forward-thinking music to emerge from the New York City underground over the decades. In 1994, he released the Jungle Liquid Sky / Ethiopia 12″, being the first release on Jungle Sky Records, and at that, the first American drum and bass production on vinyl. Since then, he has released countless singles, and albums collaborating with everyone from Afrika Bambaataa, Ali Khan, Elliot Sharp, Bill Laswell, Bernie Worell (Funkadelic), Grand Master DST, Derek Bailey, William Burroughs, Ziggy Marley, Dee Lite, Arto Lindsay, Buckethead, DJ Disk, DJ Spooky, Air Liquide, Otto with Bebel Gilberto, Chico Science and Nacao Zumbi, Funk como le gusta, BID ,Cyro Batista,,Suba, Mestre Ambrosio, Soul Coughing, Ben Neil, Neils Peter Molvar, T POWER, Terry Lynn Corrington ,Martin Koller, MC DET, Jamalski, The Swirlies, MINISTRY and others.

Random Movement – Dec 3, 2011 – Convergence 2.0

October 28th, 2011 | By

RandomMovement

“Not old music, not new music, just good music” is the Random Movement DJ’ing motto, an ideology that has carried his career to multiple performances at major club’s and festivals across 4 continents. Ever since climbing onto the soulful drum and bass vibe 9 years ago, his production skills and DJ technique have pushed him to the forefront of state-side drum & bass. Heads both old and young pack the clubs to hear his particular deep and uplifting vibe as he takes the crowd to big grins and smiles all around. With help from friend and fellow producer/DJ Marky, the epic Bassbin smasher “Stars in the Dark” hit in 2005 and flew up the charts, helping to put Random Movement firmly on the map. Since then the releases and collaborations have been pouring forth, with projects including Mixmaster Doc, S.P.Y and Redeyes to name a few. His tracks have turned many heads to his unique skills in both his songwriting and production, and his soulful, smooth and sleazy vibes have landed him releases on such labels as Innerground, Liquid V, CIA and Integral. With an album due on Innerground the first week of September, weekly radio shows and a monthly podcast (www.randommovement.org), as well as tours being planned all over the world, things are continuing to be very productive for this year and many more to come. UK THURSDAYS PRESENTS TOTAL SCIENCE N MC TALI

September 27th, 2011 | By

—TOTAL SCIENCE—

Total Science is the stage name of drum and bass producers Jason Greenhalgh and Paul Smith.

The pair first met in 1987, both living on Blackbird Leys estate in Oxford, England and brought together through a mutual love of hip hop. Distracted by the arrival of hardcore in the early nineties, record collecting was quickly followed by DJing and eventually production. Greenhalgh was the first into the studio, with “Freestyle Fanatic” launching his career in 1991. However it was the establishment of the Legend imprint and specifically Greenhalgh’s “Champion Sound”, which took their profile beyond the many anonymous white labels that were dominating the music at the time.

In 1994, the pair started recording together, with “Got to Believe” the first in a series of records which pushed the label away from the darkside[disambiguation needed] movement and more towards the epic string sections and rolling beats which started to appear on labels like Lucky Spin, Basement and Good Looking. After six years of recording singles for others, the pair established the CIA label in the closing months of 1997 with the help of Brillo from Timeless.

The release of their Silent Reign EP for Goldie’s Metalheadz breathed a new lease of life into the project, and the pair achieved a further boost with a well-timed Bad Company remix of “Champion Sound” which conjured further interest in what they were doing at their own label. Their debut album Advance exposed a further field of interest, with downtempo experiments logged as a series of “Breaks” on the majority of their early EPs extended to some deep house, this breadth taken a step further with their Skin Deep[disambiguation needed] imprint which has forged broken beat to considerable acclaim. Their pioneering of a revival in old school sounds and arrangements, together with Digital and Reinforced, dominated drum & bass throughout 2001.

—MC TALI (FAREWELL TOUR)—

Tali is accredited with being the most successful female MC in Drum N Bass of all time. With three DnB Awards, a solo album, numerous singles and guest vocals under her belt, Tali has MC’d all around the world with many of the scenes heavyweights.

Discovered by Roni Size back in 2001, Tali moved from New Zealand to the UK to sign to the legendary ‘Full Cycle Records’ and went onto write and record the first female MC album ever released in DnB – ‘Lyric on My Lip’ Full Cycle 2004 (and one of the first ever MC albums fullstop!) with production from Roni Size, Krust, Clipz, and DJ Die, with featured vocals from Dynamite MC. From this Tali was given the name ‘The First Lady of Full Cycle’ which after winning her first DnB award got shortened to ‘The First Lady of the Mic’.

Since then, Tali has gone on to MC and Record with other reputable names in DnB, such as Marky (Brazil), Shy FX, Goldie, Dillinja, Lynx, Marcus Intalex, Shimon, Camo & Krooked, Atlantic Connection (US), SS and Influx UK, Simon ‘Bassline” Smith, LTJ Bukem, EZ Rollers, Dirtyphonics, Reid Speed and Shortee, and Dope Amo to name but a few, as well as expanding into other genres, with featured vocals alongside The Freestylers, Stereotype, Martjin Ten Velden and Fran and Josh.

Tali this month is releasing her LP, ‘Dark Days, High Nights’ on Shimon’s AudioPorn label this month, and the lineup so far includes tunes from Shimon, Dirtyphonics, Benny Page, Skism, Lynx & Malibu Rhodes, and Ed Rush, to name but a few, and includes some special guest vocal appearances!

Tali has graced the covers of DJ Magazine and Knowledge, and received radio support from Jo Whiley’s ‘Live Lounge’, Steve Lamacq, Fabio and Grooverider, Crissy Criss, DJ Bailey, Annie Mac, Misterjam, and Zane Lowe throughout her career. Tali also fronts her own live Band, has composed the score to a political musical that has shown at The HighTide Festival in Suffolk and The West End, is a contributing writer to various music magazines and is currently writing a book about her experiences as a female MC within Drum N Bass.

UK THURSDAY PRESENTS LOADSTAR

September 9th, 2011 | By

At the age Bristol based Gavin Harris aka Xample and Nick Hill aka Lomax got into music, the electronic scene was already thriving. After growing up to the sound of The Human League, Quincy Jones and Prince, they both followed with passion the rise to fame of The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk, yet their sound of choice was drum and bass, inspired by local hero Roni Size, LTJ Bukem’s atmospheric grooves, Dillinja’s brutal rhythms, Ed Rush and Optical’s cyber funk and John B’s dramatic soundscapes. Both were spotted as solo artists by Ram’s Record boss Andy C, one of the biggest Djs in the world, with an exceptional ear for new talents.

Xample started on their Frequency Offshoot for a couple of 12s, before graduating to Ram with the track ‘Heaven and Hell’, included on the Dimensions 3 EP and on Andy C’s Nightlife 3 mix in 2008. Following several releases on Critical and Bingo amongst others, and ‘Artisan’ for Bounce Records, hailed as one of the tunes of 2007, Lomax signed exclusively to Ram Records. His first release for the label, the ‘Faith Massive’ EP in May 2009 went straight to number 1 in the dance charts.

Xample and Lomax had started working together in 2007. The combination of Xample’s raw dancefloor sound and Lomax experimental edge proved instantly lethal. Their heavily exposed debut ‘Lowdown/The Latter’ was released on Ram in spring 2007 and followed by the equally impressive ‘Contra/Keep Their Head Ringing’.

2010 was a pivotal year for Xample and Lomax. May saw the release of the ‘shamefully, powerfully, grippingly addictive’ (IDJ) ‘Remember’, backed by the lethal ‘Rushin’ Dragon’, showcasing the promising depth and variety of their joint talent.

After a handful of singles getting them into A listers status, the duo started to work on a debut album, and comfort their partnership by choosing a specific name. So, for the release of the awesome ‘Link ToThe Past’ (‘A huge alien mammoth’ – DJ mag), they chose to be known as Loadstar. In late 2010, the single was voted ‘best single’ at the Drum & Bass Arena Awards, confirming their dominance of the underground.

As a highly sought after remix team, they reworked Example’s ‘Two Lives’ before giving Chase & Status’s top 10 ‘Blind Faith’ some serious dancefloor credentials earlier this year. Their version of Breakage’s ‘Fighting Fire’ is already tipped as one of the tunes of the year, and has been heavily championed by radio 1’s Annie Mac for whom they recently concocted an incredible Mash Hit, spectacularly tearing Jessie J’s hit ‘Price Tag’ to shreds.

Loadstar have been spending the last few month on a mammoth DJ tour, joined by MC Texas and singer Ikay, to showcase their past, present and future anthems that will feature on their debut LP out in 2011. It was previewed late March by a single, ‘Space Between’, where soft acoustic guitar and melodic vocals gave way to a vicious bass-led monster of a tune. Despite its uncompromising edge, the track invaded daytime airwaves and dancefloors alike. It was backed b y the timeless groove of the laidback ‘BLVD’, hailed in Mixmag as ‘A Ten Tonne Liquid Chonker’.

While remaining drum and bass’ dancefloors darlings Loadstar are developing into a formidable production team. 2011 promises to propel them into the same league as Ram stablemates Sub Focus and Chase and Status. Zane Lowe recently called them ‘superstars in the making’. Watch it happen.

Doors open at 9pm with support from:
