UK THURSDAY PRESENTS CRISSY CRISS & 16 BIT

August 1st, 2011 | By

We thought it would only be fitting that for the UK Thursdays 2 Year Anniversary we would have a UK Artist Takeover. So joining us in the festivities from all the way across the pond: 16bit and Crissy Criss!!!

So mark your calendars and join us as we celebrate UK Thursdays’ 2 Year Anniversary on August 11th, 2011!

—16bit—

It’s been about a year and half since 16bit graced our decks, back when a rare severe thunderstorm engulfed the East Valley. The storm so intense it set off tornado sirens and caused the cancellation of all Southwest Airline’s flights to and from Phoenix. 16bit’s flight was even forced to detour to Denver for a couple hours.

Just months after UK Thursdays was created. The night still in search of solid residents and the formation of the bass family had just begun. Back when the venue was still Cherry Lounge & Pit and UKT only opened their doors to the 21+ crowd.

West London duo 16Bit are two of the most respected electronic producers working today.Their sound influenced as much by techno and electro as well as dub and jungle, with huge
distorted riffs and juggernaut bass underpinned by crunching drums.

Bursting onto the scene with their huge Chainsaw Calligraphy, the track received Radio 1airplay from the likes of Kissy Sell Out and Mary Anne Hobbs, with DJs as diverse as Flying Lotus, The Gaslamp Killer and The Scratch Perverts all regularly featuring their productions in their sets.

Recent remixes for the likes of Plan B, Professor Green and Noisia’s huge Machine Gun have continued to raise their profile, along with their track JUMP! being used in a Nike commercial
and a Nintendo Wii game featuring their discography.

Whether in the studio working towards their debut album, producing tracks for high profile artists, smashing huge shows or touring the world, these two are always busy. 16bit are at home on stage, enjoying themselves as much as the crowd they’re playing to. Journeying through all styles of music with elegance, their sets will go from sending the audience into a frenzy one moment to the most emotional moment the next, their sets are
nothing short of epic.

They have recently signed exclusively to Chase and Status’ MTA records.

—CRISSY CRISS—

Not only is this guy a MONSTER on the decks, but he’s also the youngest DJ/Presenter at this point in time to broadcast nationally on BBC Radio One: CRISSY CRISS!

Introduced to a set of decks aged 5 by his step-dad Kenny Ken, he then started to teach himself to mix aged 9.

The following year, Crissy covered for Kenny Ken at a festival in Essex to play after Mickey Finn. At age 11 he played his first club set at The End in London. Soon after he joined drum & bass pirate station Kool FM.

Crissy has played at major drum & bass nights across the UK and elsewhere such as New York, Toronto, Norway, Switzerland, France and Germany.

Crissy started production work from the age of 12 making music on a gaming console.

He released his first track on Back2Basics recordings in 2004. Since then Crissy has signed to Back2Basics Records and Mix n Blen Records.

He made big moves in the DNB circuit and other scene’s working alongside partner ‘Fumin’ and other projects to include ‘Tick Tock’ with ‘Skibadee’ that has been rinsed! on BBC Radio One & 1Xtra continuously by Ras Kwame, Rodney P & Skitz, MistaJam, Seani B to name a fue. ‘Tick Tock’ along side a truckload of other tracks by Crissy are also getting daytime play by 1xtra’s Ace & Invizible, Nesha, Rampage & Kiss100’s Logan Sama amongst others.

DJ SS

UK Thursdays teams up with FakeLife + Kriticz Dezinez to bring you Summer Sensations with DJ SS (UK) and Ajapai (Japan).

AJAPAI
(Rottun Recordings | Tokyo, Japan)

Earning the The 4th Annual Beatport Music Award for best Drum and Bass track with “Incoming… (Taku Remix)” Ajapai is once again another successful bass slinger from the Rottun Recording family.

“…coming from the country that has probably inspired every sound to do with Dubstep, (transformers, beast wars, anime) Ajapai aint no japanese pop producer.

His tracks will literally eat you with their dramatic build ups and trip hopping main wobble. Vocals from robots, transforming, malfunctioning, confirmations, machine gun chattering all infect this song like a virus spreading its hairy tentacles…”

DJ SS
(Formation Records | Leicester, England)

One of the UK’s finest DJ/Producers and one of the founders of Formation Records, DJ SS aka Leroy Small is an original breakbeat pioneer who has made an immense contribution to today’s drum & bass sound.

SS is one of the very select DJ / Producers who has been there right from the start, due to the hard work and dedication that he puts into his music. When the hardcore scene exploded SS was there and hasn’t looked back.

Today SS spends most of his time producing in the studio and travelling all over the world to DJ and promote his brand “World of Drum & Bass”. His travels have taken him throughout Europe, Australia, Canada, the United States of America and Asia. When SS has any spare time he is dedicated to football and is an ardent Manchester United fan and an enthusiastic local football player.

DJ-SS is now celebrating 20 years of Formation records, and 11 years of World of Drum & Bass which is the longest consecutive D&B tour and a phenomenal achievement in any music genre.

UK Thursdays Presents DJ Hype

June 14th, 2011 | By

The man, the myth, the legend: DJ Hype hits the decks at UK Thursdays this summer!

He was an early DJ on one of London’s pirate radio stations, Fantasy FM, and has been popular on the international DJ circuit, landing awards for Best Male DJ and Best Radio DJ (in 1994 and 1995, respectively) at the UK’s Hardcore Awards.[2] He also presented on the London based radio station Kiss 100, and was a player in Suburban Base’s compilation series, Drum and Bass Selection.

DJ Hype began producing in 1989, engineering and co-producing tracks (including “Exorcist” and “The Bee”) for Kickin’, Strictly Underground, and Suburban Base.

His Ganja Records label gained popularity, primarily through dance floor fillers such as “You Must Think First”, “Tiger Style” and DJ Zinc’s “Super Sharp Shooter”. Their popularity peaked with the release of their first album in 1996: Still Smokin’ , a label compilation released jointly by Ganja and Pascal’s Frontline imprint. Re-released in 1997, its success also led to a major label deal with BMG’s Parousia sub-label and the establishment of True Playaz, a Hype led DJ and production unit also including DJ Zinc, Pascal, and Rude Bwoy Monty. His 1997 Parousia EP, New Frontiers, with Ganja Kru, reached #56 in the UK Albums Chart.[1]

DJ Hype is known for his jump up DJ sets, including appearances at the Playaz night at Fabric.

On 30 March 2009, Hype released a new double album mix compilation on Rhino Records, entitled DJ Hype presents Drum and Bass Essentials.

This night we rock both rooms out with support from:

AZDNB.COM Presents Original Sin (True Playaz)

October 14th, 2010 | By

Original Sin

While some of you may not be 100% familiar with the name Original Sin, all will become clear when you realize that this is the new production alias of none other than Adam Tindall, one half of the undisputed kings of dancefloor drum & bass, G Dub.

Born and bred in Newcastle, Adam was initially drawn to D&B by albums such as the incredible ‘Platinum Breakz’ compilation from the Metalheadz camp, and Grooverider’s legendary ‘Prototype Years’. His love for the music grew and grew until the desire to become more actively involved in the scene took hold and he took up DJing shortly before enrolling himself at Music College.

It was at college that Adam met Jake Carter and the infamous Generation Dub was forged. However, it wasn’t long before the Adam realized that Music College was a pointless pursuit and he decided to quit in order to concentrate fully on making music at home. It wasn’t long before drum & bass legend DJ SS snapped up two of G Dub’s early productions for his Reformed imprint.

The successive deal with DJ Hype & Pascal’s Ganja imprint proved to be the making of the G Dub franchise, as Adam and Jake’s studio let off more anthems than an Olympic Games opening ceremony and tracks such as ‘Tink Ya Bad?’, ‘Warp Speed’ ‘Forever’ and ‘Beast City’ collectively smashed up more dancefloors than a specialist nightclub demolition team.

In early 2008 Adam and Jake parted company and Adam decided to pursue solo avenues under the name Original Sin. The ridiculously heavy ‘Don’t Be Silly’, ‘Cheater Cheater’, ‘D For Danger’ and his remixes of Shy FX’s classic Ebony Dubsters track ‘Rah’ and Rufige Kru’s ‘Monkey Boy’ have gone a long way to stamping his individual mark on the Drum & Bass scene.

Original Sin shows no signs of slowing down, though, as Adam prepares to drop the huge ‘Dr Feels Good’ EP on Playaz, showcasing a completely refined and mature sound which is as deadly on the dancefloor as it is on the radio.

UK Thursdays Presents LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad

October 1st, 2010 | By

This Thursday, October 14th we bring you Drum and Bass legends: LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad!

Arguably the prime innovator in the development of jungle from its early status as an offshoot of hardcore techno into the respected, stylistic genre it became by the end of the 1990s,
LTJ Bukem gained fame as an auteur in all fields of the drum’n’bass movement: as a top-flight breakbeat DJ, owner and label head of the Good Looking/Looking Good stable of labels and, of course, for his recordings — inspired by the lush strings and natural ambience of ’70s jazz fusion masters like Lonnie Liston Smith and Chick Corea as well as elegiac Chicago house and moody Detroit techno. Allied with the early-’90s rave and hardcore scene, Bukem began working on production near the end of the 1980s; though his light, airy sound made little sense to his contemporaries, Bukem’s style was emulated much more as the jungle scene gained momentum during the mid-’90s. While such producers as Roni Size and Goldie gained the limelight for their solo work, Bukem purposely downplayed his own artistic career in favor of mix albums and label-spanning retrospectives that highlighted dozens of artists from his labels.

Born in London in 1967, Danny Williamson was adopted and raised in Watford by strict Baptist parents, earning his nickname from the TV series Hawaii Five-O (“book ’em, Danno”). He took trumpet lessons as a child; played piano and drums in various school bands; and began listening to a wide range of music, including jazz, soul, and fusion plus hip-hop and electro. After being expelled from school at the age of 16, Bukem made the natural move to DJ status later in the ’80s; inspired by rare groove DJs like Tim Westwood and Gilles Peterson, Bukem and several friends set up the Sunshine sound system and played out the latest hip-hop and electro tracks at DJ battles around his Luton base.

When the acid house explosion hit Britain near the turn of the decade, Bukem gradually stopped going to sound system battles and began attending the ever-growing raves dotting England’s countryside. He began mixing at them as well, and produced his first track, “Logical Progression,” in 1990. Bukem soon grew frustrated with a lack of control over his own recordings, however, and in 1991 decided to form his own label, Good Looking Records. Bukem’s production style was a continuing anachronism on the rave/breakbeat scene; early Good Looking tracks like “Demons Theme,” “Atlantis,” and “Music” provided a soulful, melodic alternative to the prevailing hardcore tracks then in vogue.

By 1994, LTJ Bukem had formed his second label (Looking Good Records) and begun the formation of an artist collective — Peshay, Aquarius (aka Photek), PFM, ILS & Solo, Blame, Nookie, Seba & Lo-Tec, Tayla, Funky Technicians — similarly inclined toward melodicism and epic expanses of sound. In October of that same year, he began the club night Speed at the Mars Bar in order to spread the Good Looking/Looking Good approach to sound. With Bukem and jungle pioneer Fabio spinning breakbeat records while MC Conrad added verbal gymnastics over the top, it soon became one of the most popular clubs in London. Appropriately, Bukem’s first full-length was a mix album, Mixmag Live!, Vol. 3, which confirmed his status as one of the top breakbeat DJs in the drum’n’bass scene.

The jungle phenomenon had begun to crest as a commercial force in 1994, and the appearance of Goldie’s Timeless one year later signaled the dawn of widespread critical respect for drum’n’bass. Though Bukem signed a major deal as well (through London), he debuted in true label-head fashion, releasing the Good Looking/Looking Good compilation Logical Progression instead of a proper solo LP. Bukem did contribute several productions (and mixed tracks for the second disc of the set), but the album definitely portrayed an artist committed to the jungle community more than his own career.

After a subsequent DJ tour of America (his first), Bukem showcased a new direction in late 1996 with Earth, Vol. 1. Another compilation (this time spanning his catchall subsidiary Earth Records), it concentrated on midtempo tracks inspired by hip-hop, soul-jazz, and funk — again featuring very few tracks actually by Bukem. The sequel to Logical Progression continued the same share-the-wealth strategy — it was helmed and mixed by Good Looking right-hand man Blame. Besides inaugurating yet another mix album series (Progression Sessions) in 1998, Bukem released several additional volumes in both the Logical Progression and Earth series. Journey Inwards, his first full-fledged solo album, followed in the spring of 2000. Producer 01 was issued a year later. Good Looking’s release schedule hasn’t waned in the years since, with Bukem remaining as active as ever.
